TikTok Launches New Feature in Pakistan to Curb Misinformation During Flood Season

KARACHI – July 29, 2025:
As monsoon rains continue to lash parts of Pakistan, TikTok has rolled out a new search feature aimed at countering the spread of misinformation during the ongoing flood season.

The popular video-sharing platform has introduced a dedicated flood information guide that appears whenever users search for flood-related content. The initiative is part of TikTok’s broader strategy to ensure that its users have access to reliable, real-time updates during times of crisis.

According to TikTok officials, the newly launched feature will prominently display a banner encouraging users to refer to verified sources — helping them separate fact from fiction in the midst of widespread social media content.

One key component of the new guide is its direct linkage to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) — Pakistan’s primary agency for disaster response. Through this feature, users can easily find credible, government-issued information about weather alerts, evacuation notices, and flood updates.

In addition to this, the guide connects users to TikTok’s Safety Center and its Tragic Event Support resource, which provides mental health support and guidance for individuals dealing with distressing events such as natural disasters or personal tragedies.

The company clarified that “tragic events” may include anything from earthquakes and floods to severe accidents or personal trauma. The platform also offers tips for responsibly sharing such content and explains how to report misinformation or harmful posts.

“We recognize the importance of fast, accurate information during emergencies,” said Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at TikTok Pakistan. “By partnering with trusted disaster response organizations and making their resources easily accessible, we’re helping users make informed choices and stay safe.”

This feature is part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to make its platform a safer space, especially during national crises. The company says it remains committed to promoting fact-based awareness, reducing panic, and supporting communities in need.

For a platform with millions of users in Pakistan, this step reflects a growing responsibility: using digital reach not just for entertainment, but for empowerment and public safety when it matters most.
