KARACHI — In a tragic incident on Friday morning, a student lost her life after being struck by a university point at the University of Karachi.
The victim, identified as Aniqa Saeed, was a student of the Social Work Department. According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred near the Dr. Mahmood Hasan Library around 9:15 a.m.
Students present at the scene reported that Aniqa was getting off the bus through its rear door when the driver reversed the vehicle. She slipped and came under the rear wheels. Fellow students and university staff rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Police arrived at the scene and detained the driver; however, according to witnesses, Aniqa’s family intervened and insisted on his release, refusing to lodge a case or pursue legal proceedings.
The incident sparked outrage among students, who gathered in protest, blaming the administration for negligence. They claimed that the university’s outdated and poorly maintained buses pose serious risks to student safety.
Protesters demanded that all dilapidated vehicles be taken off the road immediately and called for a transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Aniqa’s death.
As the university community mourns the loss, questions are once again being raised about campus safety standards and the administration’s failure to ensure secure transportation for its students.
