Six dead as heavy rains lash Sindh, flooding roads and crippling power supply.

HYDERABAD/JACOBABAD:
At least six people lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Sindh as widespread downpours lashed multiple districts from Saturday night into Sunday, triggering urban flooding, power outages, and severe disruption to daily life.

In Hyderabad, an early morning monsoon spell inundated main roads within just 25 minutes of rainfall. The Met Office recorded 18.6mm of rain at the airport observatory and 21.8mm in the city. Key commercial and residential areas including Cloth Market, Fatima Jinnah Road, Makki Shah, Railway Station, Qasimabad’s low-lying streets, Wahdat Colony, Hussainabad, and Latifabad were submerged as blocked drains failed to clear accumulating water.

The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) reported that 55 of its feeders tripped during the rainfall, plunging many localities into darkness. Restoration efforts continued gradually through the day.

Elsewhere in Sindh, tragedy struck as two women and a teenage boy were electrocuted in separate incidents while two young brothers and a seven-year-old boy drowned.

In Larkana, which received 93.5mm of rain while Mohenjo Daro recorded 86mm, two women died of electric shock while trying to operate water motors at home. The victims were identified as 40-year-old Razia Mugheri from Yar Mohammed Colony and 22-year-old Kaveeta Chachar from Islam Chachar village.

In Jacobabad’s Garhi Sabayo area, 13-year-old Imdad Ali Sarki was electrocuted after touching an electric pole outside his house. He was rushed to the civil hospital but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Tragedy also befell Khuda Bakhsh Noorani village in Thull taluka of Jacobabad, where two brothers, Rashid Ali and Abu Bakar of the Khoso tribe, drowned while bathing in a canal. Their bodies were later found floating after frantic searches by family members.

Separately, a seven-year-old boy named Misbah drowned while playing in a pond formed by accumulated rainwater near his house.

Upper Sindh districts including Sukkur, Kandhkot-Kashmore, Khairpur, and Jacobabad saw multiple spells of moderate to heavy rainfall from late Saturday through Sunday evening, accompanied by strong winds that caused hours-long power outages and severe disruption to telecom networks.

The rains left urban and rural areas waterlogged, blocking roads and access to homes, hospitals, railway stations, bus stands, and workplaces. Drainage systems in nearly all towns were overwhelmed.

In Khairpur, a vegetable shop’s roof owned by the municipal committee collapsed amid the downpour, though no injuries were reported.

Mirpurkhas and its outskirts experienced intermittent showers that flooded highways, streets, and low-lying neighbourhoods. Municipal authorities failed to drain water, resulting in knee-deep stagnant pools mixed with sewage, especially in Lalchandabad, Toorabad, Dholanabad, M.A. Jinnah Road, Station Road, Hameed Pura Colony, Hirabad, Nai Para, Bhansinghabad, Ismail Shah graveyard area, Panhwer Colony, Rajar Colony, and Pak Colony.

Most areas of Mirpurkhas also faced prolonged power outages throughout the rainfall, compounding public distress.
