KARACHI:
In the wake of a recent building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari area, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed on Wednesday that 11 hazardous residential structures have been evacuated as a safety measure.
Speaking to a private news channel, Memon said the provincial government had moved swiftly to act against buildings declared structurally unsound. “These buildings posed a serious risk to life. Their evacuation was necessary and urgent,” he noted.
Addressing concerns about the fate of the displaced residents, the minister said the government is exploring options to provide temporary shelter to families genuinely in need. “We are assessing the situation to identify those who require immediate assistance,” he added.
However, Memon made it clear that there is no proposal under consideration for compensating the owners of these buildings. “These are privately owned properties. It is not within the government’s mandate to pay for private land or buildings,” he explained.
He added that any reconstruction will be carried out by private developers. “We will engage with the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) and other relevant stakeholders to find a workable path forward,” he stated.
The evacuation comes amid growing public scrutiny over aging infrastructure and unregulated construction in the city. Authorities say more inspections are underway to prevent further tragedies.
