Saudi Arabia Welcomes Islamic New Year 1447 as Muharram Moon is Sighted

Pakistan likely to spot crescent on June 26, Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to confirm

Saudi Arabia, along with several Gulf nations, officially ushered in the Islamic New Year 1447 Hijri on Wednesday evening, following the sighting of the Muharram moon. The new year begins on Thursday, June 26, as confirmed by the Kingdom’s religious authorities.

With the appearance of the crescent, Muharram — the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar — has commenced, setting the stage for spiritual reflection and cultural observances across the Muslim world. In Saudi Arabia, the sacred Day of Ashura will fall on Friday, July 5.

To mark the beginning of the new year, countries including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have planned a series of religious programmes and cultural events. One of the most significant traditions — the ceremonial replacement of the Kiswa, the black cloth covering the Kaaba in Makkah — has also taken place, as is customary with the arrival of the new Islamic year.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the crescent for Muharram is expected to be visible on Thursday, June 26, based on astronomical data. The final decision, however, rests with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which will meet to observe the moon and issue an official announcement.
