PM Shehbaz Welcomes Hamas Statement, Sees ‘Window for Ceasefire’ in Gaza

ISLAMABAD– Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday voiced cautious optimism over fresh diplomatic momentum in the Israel–Palestine conflict, describing Hamas’ latest statement as an opening for a possible ceasefire.

In a post on X, the premier lauded the efforts of world leaders, singling out US President Donald Trump along with key Middle Eastern partners, for their role in pushing forward negotiations.

“Alhamdolillah, we are closer to a ceasefire than at any point since this genocide began against the Palestinian people,” Shehbaz wrote, reaffirming Pakistan’s steadfast support for Palestine’s cause.

He added that gratitude was due to President Trump and to the leaderships of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia, who engaged in talks with Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Shehbaz said Hamas’ statement had created “a window for ceasefire and peace that we must not allow to close again.” He further pledged that Pakistan would continue to work with regional partners to pursue “everlasting peace in Palestine.”

Meanwhile, President Trump on Friday urged Israel to halt its bombardment of Gaza, pointing to Hamas’ willingness to consider “lasting peace” under a new ceasefire arrangement. It was the first time since his return to office in January that Trump publicly called on Israel, Washington’s closest ally in the Middle East, to suspend airstrikes.

“Based on the statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He acknowledged, however, that the situation remained volatile: “Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long-sought peace in the Middle East.”

In an unusual move, both Trump and the White House shared Hamas’ statement on social media. Later, from the Oval Office, Trump released a short video message, thanking Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Jordan for their mediation.

“This is a very special day, maybe unprecedented,” he said, expressing hope that the hostages would soon be reunited with their families.
