Petition Filed Against K-Electric’s Recovery of Billions in Past Losses

KARACHI (September 22, 2025) – The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has challenged the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (NEPRA) decision allowing K-Electric to recover billions of rupees in past losses from its consumers, calling the move unjust and anti-people.

According to details, MQM Pakistan has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, urging the judiciary to safeguard citizens from what it termed NEPRA’s “excessive and unlawful decision.” The plea, submitted by MQM leader Amir Siddiqui, has made both NEPRA and K-Electric parties to the case.

The petition contests NEPRA’s SRO 1287(I)/2025, issued on July 18, which granted K-Electric permission to charge consumers for line losses and other past adjustments. MQM argues that this essentially forces law-abiding, bill-paying residents to shoulder the burden of mismanagement, inefficiency, and power theft.

Speaking earlier, MQM’s senior leader Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan had announced the party’s intention to legally challenge the decision, warning that it would cripple Karachi’s economy and place unbearable pressure on households, businesses, and industries alike.

“The people of Karachi are being collectively punished,” the petition states, adding that NEPRA has exceeded its legal mandate by transferring the cost of electricity theft and operational losses onto paying customers.

It is worth noting that NEPRA has already authorized K-Electric to recover Rs74 billion under this mechanism. Alongside NEPRA and KE, the federal government has also been cited as a respondent in the case.
