Parking Fees Scrapped Across Karachi

The Sindh government has officially ended parking charges on all public roads in Karachi’s 25 towns. A notification from the local government department confirmed the order on Friday, following instructions from Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

This change is part of a wider parking reform that aims to make public parking across the city completely free. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the decision prioritizes the needs of the public and assured that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) remains financially sound.

From now on, parking fees will only apply in specific locations like designated plazas, commercial properties, or spots approved by the council. The order makes it clear: no organization or individual is allowed to collect parking fees on any public road.

So far, implementation has already started on 46 major roads in the city. The policy will gradually extend to other areas as part of a phased rollout. Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) have been ordered to stop all parking fee collection immediately. Municipal commissioners have received strict directives, and failure to comply will lead to legal consequences.

Officials have also issued a strong warning against unauthorized parking fees. A crackdown has begun on what they called the “parking mafia,” with clear consequences for anyone found illegally collecting money. The government emphasized that fee collection outside of designated zones is now completely banned, and action will be taken swiftly against any municipal officials who don’t enforce the new rules.

This new directive builds on a previous KMC move to eliminate parking fees and now applies the policy citywide to all 25 town administrations.

“This decision puts citizens first,” Mayor Wahab said, stressing that the goal was to make life easier for the people of Karachi.
