ISLAMABAD — In a major relief for Pakistani travelers, citizens can now drive legally in 132 countries around the world with Pakistan’s International Driving License (IDL) a move that promises greater convenience for those planning to work, study, or travel abroad.
For years, Pakistani motorists faced cumbersome procedures and limited access when it came to securing an international driving permit. But with recent reforms in the licensing process, obtaining the IDL has become far simpler, allowing Pakistanis to hit the road in destinations from the United States and the United Kingdom to Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Officials said the development is aimed at promoting safer and standardized international mobility while ensuring Pakistani licenses meet global verification criteria. The license, which remains valid for one year, allows Pakistani citizens to legally rent and drive vehicles across a wide range of countries spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
To apply, candidates must visit their local Driving License Authority (DLA) and submit key documents, including attested copies of their passport, CNIC, and national driving license, along with two passport-sized photographs. Applicants over 50 years of age must also provide a medical fitness certificate, while all applicants are required to submit a blood group report especially if applying through the Motorway Police.
The process includes biometric verification, a brief eyesight test, and in some cities, a short computer-based traffic sign quiz. In Islamabad, for instance, applicants also undergo a scenario-based written test. After passing all checks, the International Driving License is issued within a week, opening doors to hassle-free driving abroad.
This new accessibility allows Pakistanis not only to explore new destinations but also to travel for work and business more conveniently. Experts say the initiative will encourage international tourism and help overseas Pakistanis integrate more easily into their host countries.
From Canada to Qatar, Spain to South Africa, and India to Indonesia, the list of approved nations highlights Pakistan’s growing recognition in global transportation systems a step forward in connecting citizens to the world with greater freedom and confidence.
