Mother Kills Two Children in DHA; Police Cite Mental Health History

KARACHI:
In a deeply disturbing incident, a woman in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area is accused of killing her two young children by slitting their throats with a sharp-edged weapon.

Police have identified the suspect as Adeeba, who was taken into custody shortly after the crime. Officers say the murder weapon has been recovered from the scene.

According to investigators, Adeeba had been struggling with severe mental health issues for years and suffered from recurrent epileptic seizures. These health challenges had reportedly strained her marriage, which ended in divorce last year.

Following the separation, a court granted primary custody of the children to their father, Ghufran, though he would occasionally allow them to spend time with their mother.

Police said the tragedy unfolded during one such visit. On the day of the killings, the children were staying with Adeeba when she allegedly suffered a seizure and, in a state of mental disorientation, attacked them inside the bathroom.

The victims have been identified as Sameeha, aged four and a half, and Zarrar, aged seven. Authorities say Adeeba phoned her ex-husband immediately after the incident to confess.

Ghufran, accompanied by his brother, contacted police via the emergency helpline. Responding officers arrived at the house, recovered the children’s bodies, and transported them to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal procedures.

Police have launched a formal investigation into the case and say further details will be shared once the post-mortem report is available.
