Made-in-Pakistan Secure Phones Become a Reality

In a significant step toward digital self-reliance, Pakistan has successfully developed its first fully secure mobile phone designed specifically for government communication. The device, created under a pilot project of the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), features both hardware and software engineered entirely within the country.

According to senior NTC officials who spoke to ProPakistani, the handset runs on a custom-built operating system that has been deliberately designed to function without internet connectivity. This limitation, they explained, is intentional as it drastically minimizes the risk of cyber intrusions and foreign surveillance. Every application on the phone has been developed locally, and the device is compatible with SIM cards from all Pakistani telecom operators.

Officials further revealed that the phone is restricted to communicating only with other secure handsets of the same kind. This closed network approach ensures that sensitive conversations stay within a protected environment.

One of the key features highlighted by NTC is the absence of any data backup option. In the event of theft, loss, or attempted tampering, extracting information from the device becomes virtually impossible. Communication made through the phone cannot be intercepted or monitored, offering a level of protection that traditional mobile platforms cannot match.

NTC has informed the authorities that the initial phase of the project has produced ten secure phones. Expansion into mass production, however, will require additional funding before the technology can be deployed across various government departments.

Officials also stressed that popular commercial apps particularly WhatsApp do not meet the security standards required for official communication. They noted that during a recent period of heightened tensions between Pakistan and India, WhatsApp conversations were compromised, underscoring the urgency of developing a secure, indigenous communication platform for government use.
