Lawyer Files Petition Seeking E-Challan Relief, Citing Financial Struggles of Legal Professionals

ISLAMABAD — A lawyer has approached authorities, requesting exemption from e-challan fines for members of the legal profession, citing financial hardships and the burden of digital traffic penalties on law-abiding citizens.

In the petition, the lawyer highlighted that many in the legal field do not earn stable or substantial incomes, yet they dedicate their days to assisting the public, representing clients, and ensuring courts operate efficiently. He argued that the increasing number of digital fines is adding unnecessary stress to an already financially strained group.

“The purpose of e-challans should be to promote road safety, not impose extra burdens on professionals who uphold the justice system,” the petitioner said, emphasizing that lawyers deserve special consideration due to their societal contributions.

The submission has sparked discussions among the legal community, with many echoing the concern that technology-based penalties sometimes fail to account for individual circumstances. Several advocates have suggested that the government establish a clear framework to provide relief for professionals who serve the justice system while maintaining law and order.

Authorities have yet to respond, but the petition has opened a wider debate on whether exemptions or leniency should be extended to certain professions under the e-challan regime.
