Karachi Weather Begins to Shift as Nights Turn Cooler, Says Met Department

KARACHI — As the direction of winds changes, Karachi has begun to experience the first signs of seasonal transition, with a noticeable coolness creeping into the city’s nights and early mornings.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), winds blowing from the east have kept daytime conditions hot and dry across the metropolis. However, the department noted that evenings and early mornings are now bringing a slight drop in temperature, offering some relief to residents after weeks of persistent heat.

At 8 a.m. Thursday, the temperature in Karachi was recorded at 28°C with humidity levels hovering around 73 percent. Forecasters expect the mercury to rise to around 35°C during the day, maintaining warm conditions before cooler air settles in after sunset.

Meanwhile, the city’s air quality has sharply deteriorated amid shifting wind patterns. According to the Global Air Pollution Index, Karachi now ranks as the sixth most polluted city in the world, with air quality levels falling into the hazardous category.

The Met Department reported that the concentration of particulate matter (PM2.5) in Karachi’s atmosphere has reached 158 micrograms per cubic meter, a level considered harmful to human health. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such pollution can lead to respiratory issues, especially among children, the elderly, and those with preexisting conditions.

Meteorologists say the coming days may bring a gradual dip in nighttime temperatures, signaling the slow but steady arrival of autumn in the city. However, they also advise residents to remain cautious about poor air quality and to limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours.
