Karachi – August 7, 2025
Karachi’s traffic police are stepping up their preparations to launch a city-wide e-challan system, marking a significant shift toward digital traffic enforcement. In the second phase of their awareness campaign, authorities aim to ensure that citizens are fully informed before the rollout begins.
According to sources, the upcoming e-challan system will rely on photographic and video evidence to record traffic violations. These digital proofs will be used to automatically issue challans, which will then be sent directly to the violators’ registered home addresses. The initiative is part of a larger strategy to curb traffic violations and promote responsible driving across the city.
In a key development this week, Karachi’s DIG Traffic held a meeting with outdoor advertising companies to discuss collaboration for a wide-reaching awareness drive. As a result, more than 100 locations throughout Karachi will now feature road safety messages in the form of streamers, billboards, and signage, educating citizens on basic traffic rules and the consequences of ignoring them.
In addition to physical advertising, informational videos, photos, and digital content will be shared with the public to reinforce the importance of road safety. The goal is not just to penalize, but to foster a culture of responsibility and awareness among Karachi’s drivers.
Authorities have also announced that details of any issued e-challan will be accessible through the official Karachi Traffic Police mobile app, making it easier for citizens to track and settle fines.
Speaking to local media, officials urged Karachi’s motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary penalties and disruption. They emphasized that the new system is not about punishment but about encouraging safer roads for everyone.
Meanwhile, the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department has also extended the deadline for replacing vehicle number plates with the new Ajrak-themed, security-enhanced plates. The original deadline of August 14 has now been pushed to October 31, following instructions from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a recent meeting with Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla.
The extended deadline is expected to provide some relief to vehicle owners struggling to make the switch amid rising costs and logistical hurdles.
