Karachi Pays Rs 3,256 Billion in Taxes but Gets Nothing in Return: Munim Zafar

KARACHI:
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Munim Zafar has slammed both federal and provincial governments, claiming that despite contributing Rs 3,256 billion in taxes, Karachi continues to suffer from neglect and mismanagement.

Speaking to ARY News, Zafar said the recent monsoon rains caused losses of around Rs 10 billion, leaving the city in chaos. He criticized the broken roads and crippled infrastructure, holding both the federal and Sindh governments accountable for the worsening situation.

Highlighting Karachi’s long-standing grievances, the JI leader questioned why the Rs 1,100 billion development plan for the city has never been implemented. He pointed out that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has ruled Sindh for 18 years, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has held power for 14 years, yet neither has delivered on promises to the city.

“PPP and MQM are busy safeguarding their own interests, but when it comes to Karachi, they do nothing. Even the Rs 600 million allocated for cleaning drains has disappeared,” Zafar alleged.

He further criticized the provincial government for withholding funds from local towns and depriving the city of administrative authority. Referring to former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal, Zafar said those who raised questions were sidelined under the pretext of china cutting. He also mocked Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, saying he “has time to dance but none to address the people’s problems.”

Zafar added that Jamaat-e-Islami has the mandate of 85 union councils, yet a “fake mayor” has been imposed on the city. “During the rains, Sindh government officials were nowhere to be seen,” he remarked.
