Karachi Man Jailed for Six Years Over Social Media Harassment Case

KARACHI: A local court has sentenced a man to six years in prison for blackmailing a young woman by uploading her inappropriate photos on Facebook after she refused to continue a relationship with him.

According to details, Judicial Magistrate Sharqi announced the verdict, convicting the accused, identified as Abdullah, under cybercrime laws. In addition to the prison term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs60,000.

Prosecutor Shiraz Rajpar informed the court that the complainant had initially befriended Abdullah, and the two were informally engaged. However, she decided to end the relationship due to what she described as his “inappropriate behavior.”

After the breakup, the accused began harassing and blackmailing her, eventually creating a fake profile to upload objectionable photos on social media. The forensic report confirmed that Abdullah was directly responsible for the uploads, which the court said demonstrated “anger and resentment” toward the victim.

The prosecution argued that the case highlighted the dangers of online harassment and cyber abuse, stressing that the evidence presented left no doubt about the accused’s guilt. The court accepted the prosecution’s stance and handed down the sentence.

It is worth noting that the case was originally registered by the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, which investigated and gathered digital evidence that ultimately led to the conviction.
