KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that Karachi and several districts of Sindh could face heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and urban flooding as monsoon currents are expected to persist through August 23.
In its latest weather advisory issued Sunday, the Met Office said rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Tharparkar. The downpours are forecast to be most intense on Monday and Tuesday, with some areas expected to receive isolated heavy falls.
Officials cautioned that strong winds and lightning may disrupt daily life, trigger flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, and damage vulnerable structures such as poorly built houses, electricity poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels. The advisory also urged farmers to adjust their agricultural plans in view of the changing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the water situation at Guddu and Sukkur barrages remains at a low flood level, while Kotri Barrage is reported to be flowing normally.
The PMD’s warning comes as northern Pakistan reels from the devastating impact of monsoon rains that have already claimed more than 300 lives, causing flash floods and landslides across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Similar isolated heavy showers are also expected in the Pothohar region, upper KP, south Punjab, southeast Sindh, and parts of Balochistan during the evening and nighttime hours.
