Karachi Airport Runway to Remain Closed for Three Hours Daily Amid Taxiway Construction Work

KARACHI: One of Karachi’s main runways will remain closed for three hours daily over the next 20 days, as authorities move ahead with plans to construct a new taxiway for aircraft.

According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Runway 7R/25L will be unavailable from November 5 to November 24, between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm each day. The notification stated that the closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction work and ensure the safe movement of aircraft once the new taxiway is completed.

However, the NOTAM clarified that the runway will remain accessible for VVIP movements and emergency landings, if required, during the closure period.

The temporary suspension is expected to cause minor operational adjustments at Jinnah International Airport, Pakistan’s busiest air hub, which handles both domestic and international traffic. Airlines have been advised to plan flight schedules accordingly to avoid disruptions.

The development comes at a time when Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is already facing internal challenges. Just last month, PIA engineers staged a symbolic protest by wearing black armbands, demanding a raise in salaries and allowances. The standoff between management and the engineering department led to significant delays and flight disruptions, affecting several international routes.

While the CAA has assured that safety and operational efficiency remain top priorities, frequent interruptions whether due to technical issues or infrastructure upgrades continue to test the resilience of Pakistan’s aviation sector.

Once the construction is complete, the new taxiway is expected to enhance ground efficiency and reduce congestion at the country’s largest airport.
