Karachi Administration Confronts Gas Company Over Rampant Road Cutting

Karachi, August 27, 2025 – The Karachi administration has expressed strong concern over the unchecked road cutting being carried out by the Sui Southern Gas Company, an issue that has drawn mounting criticism from citizens and higher authorities alike.

According to official sources, Commissioner Karachi has called an urgent meeting at noon today at the Commissioner House to address the matter. Senior officials including the Managing Director of SSGC, the Chief Executive Officer of the Water Corporation, representatives of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), and municipal commissioners from all towns have been directed to attend. The move comes after Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, issued a notice to the Commissioner, demanding immediate action.

The gas company began laying new pipelines in November 2024, with a completion target of September 2025. However, town chairmen revealed that the company is now seeking an extension until December, despite widespread frustration over delays. The prolonged work has left large sections of the city’s roads dug up, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

Officials at the Commissioner House confirmed that today’s meeting will seek a final, non-negotiable deadline from the gas company to complete its work. The situation has been further aggravated by the recent spell of heavy monsoon rains, which worsened the already fragile condition of Karachi’s roads.

Residents say the city’s deteriorating infrastructure, coupled with uncoordinated development work, has made daily travel a nightmare. The administration is now under pressure to resolve the issue before it spirals into a bigger urban crisis.
