KARACHI:
Karachi continued to reel under intense heat and humidity on Monday, with the Meteorological Department forecasting showers accompanied by strong winds later in the evening.
According to the Met Office, sea breezes over the city remain suspended, while hot and dry winds from the northeast are blowing at nearly 19 kilometers per hour. Daytime temperatures are expected to peak between 37°C and 39°C, though residents are feeling the heat intensity closer to 42°C due to high humidity, which was recorded at 65 percent.
Officials have warned that unstable weather conditions could bring rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to several districts of Sindh from September 30 through October 3. Areas most likely to be affected include Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Tharparkar. Karachi, too, may experience light to moderate showers with winds in the evening.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall earlier inundated low-lying areas in Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Mori, and Sujawal, with particularly intense downpours reported in Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar.
The Met Office has also issued its first advisory regarding a potential tropical cyclone. A low-pressure system near India’s Gujarat region is expected to move into the northeast Arabian Sea by October 1. Once over water, it may strengthen into a depression and could evolve further into a cyclone.
For now, however, officials have clarified that there is no immediate threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas. The Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi has said it is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates should the system intensify.
