KARACHI — Inspector General of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has announced strict new penalties for motorists driving without a valid license in Karachi, warning that traffic rules will now be enforced with greater seriousness.
Speaking at a recent ceremony, the IG revealed that authorities had initially considered imposing fines as high as Rs100,000 for violations, but the Sindh government directed police to set more practical amounts. Under the revised structure:
- Motorcyclists without a license will face a fine of Rs20,000
- Car drivers will be fined Rs30,000
- Heavy vehicle drivers will be fined Rs50,000
The police chief highlighted that nearly 300,000 Karachi residents have already obtained online driving licenses, calling it a positive sign for the city. He stressed that streamlining the licensing process is critical to improving traffic management and ensuring safer roads in the long run.
Digital E-Challan System on the Way
In a major step toward modernizing traffic enforcement, Karachi’s traffic police are preparing to roll out an e-challan system. Under this “faceless” setup, violations will be detected through digital evidence such as photos and videos, and challans will be delivered directly to the violator’s home via post. Details will also be accessible through the official mobile app.
To support this transition, the traffic police have launched the second phase of an extensive awareness campaign. More than 100 locations across the city have been fitted with outdoor advertisements, including streamers, signboards, and safety messages. Social media, videos, and other digital tools are also being used to spread awareness about road discipline.
Purpose Behind the Crackdown
Officials explained that these measures are part of a broader strategy to instill respect for traffic rules and reduce violations. By pairing higher fines with automated enforcement, the authorities hope to curb reckless driving, improve road safety, and bring greater order to Karachi’s congested streets.
Citizens have been urged to obtain valid licenses and follow traffic laws to avoid heavy fines and unnecessary legal trouble.
