Karachi, August 29, 2025 — The ongoing flood emergency has begun to take a heavy toll on Pakistan’s railway operations, with officials confirming the cancellation of several passenger trains and disruptions in scheduling.
According to railway authorities, the Pak Business Express was called off on Friday due to both flooding and a shortage of passengers. In addition, the Shah Hussain Express will remain suspended for four days, from August 30 to September 2, with affected travelers being accommodated on the Karachi Express and Green Line.
The cancellations come as floodwaters continue to rise across Punjab. Large volumes of water released from India have swelled the Sutlej River, putting at risk thousands of families in adjoining districts. Officials reported that inflows at Head Ganda Singh surged to an extremely high level of 261,053 cusecs, while Head Sulemanki registered a moderate flood at 113,124 cusecs.
Rising waters under the Baba Farid Bridge and Bhukan Patan Bridge have already inundated parts of the river belt, submerging nearly 109 villages. Authorities estimate that more than 150,000 people have been directly affected, with over 100,000 residents forced to leave their homes without formal evacuation assistance.
Local administrations are scrambling to provide relief as hundreds of settlements remain under water. With the flood situation worsening, officials warn that further disruption to railway services and mass displacement of residents cannot be ruled out.
