A mild earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rattled several parts of Balochistan late Thursday night, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in fear. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremors were recorded at 2:45 AM and were felt in Quetta and surrounding districts.
The quake’s epicenter was located in the northern region of Balochistan, with noticeable tremors reported from Ziarat, Harnai, Zardalu, Khost, Shahrag, Muslim Bagh, Khanozai, Kan Mehtarzai, Rud Malazai, and Sarkhab. Many residents said the shaking lasted only a few seconds but was strong enough to wake people from their sleep.
While the tremors caused brief panic in some areas, authorities have confirmed that there were no reports of injuries, fatalities, or structural damage. Light shocks were also felt in parts of Quetta city, though they subsided quickly.
Soon after the quake, rescue and district administration teams began monitoring the situation. Officials confirmed that essential services including electricity, communication networks, and transportation remained fully operational.
Given Balochistan’s history of frequent seismic activity, the provincial disaster management authorities remain on high alert. Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and follow safety precautions in case of aftershocks.
Local experts also reiterated basic safety measures: avoid standing near weak structures, check gas and electrical lines for leaks, and identify safe spots inside homes or workplaces where people can take cover during an earthquake.
Though this tremor caused no harm, officials reminded citizens that preparedness and awareness are vital in minimizing risks from future quakes in the region.
