KARACHI (September 4, 2025): The Flour Mills Association Sindh has raised alarm over the possibility of another surge in wheat and flour prices, warning that consumers may soon face even greater pressure on their household budgets.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Association Chairman Junaid Aziz cautioned that unless the government makes a timely decision on wheat imports, prices could spiral further. “Wheat remains costly in Pakistan, while it is available at a lower rate in the international market. If imports are delayed, the burden will continue to grow,” he said.
The past month has already witnessed a sharp spike in prices. According to figures shared by the association, wheat prices jumped by Rs 35 per kilogram between August 1 and September 1, climbing from Rs 62 to Rs 97 per kg. Flour prices followed suit, with 2.5-gram flour rising from Rs 76 to Rs 99 per kg, while fine flour increased from Rs 79 to Rs 108 per kg in the same period.
Aziz explained that the price of wheat in the local market currently stands at Rs 96 per kg, compared to Rs 85 per kg internationally. He noted that if the Sindh government decides to release wheat into the market next week, prices could see some relief.
However, he emphasized that domestic measures alone may not be enough. “The government will need to import at least 1.5 million tons of wheat this year to stabilize supplies and prevent further escalation in costs,” Aziz stressed.
The rising cost of wheat and flour staples for millions across the country has become a growing concern for both households and policymakers, as food inflation continues to weigh heavily on an already strained economy.
