Karachi Braces for Fresh Spell of Rain from August 30: PMD

KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that Karachi is likely to receive another round of rainfall starting Friday, August 30, which may continue until September 2.

In its latest weather advisory, the PMD cautioned local authorities about the risk of urban flooding during this period. The department also predicted thunderstorms and rain in Islamabad from August 29 to September 2, while heavy downpours are expected in northern and north-eastern Punjab districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal, particularly on August 30 and 31.

The warning comes just a week after Karachi witnessed devastating rains that submerged large parts of the city. Torrential showers, which crossed the 200-millimetre mark in some areas, left streets looking like rivers. Rescue teams even had to deploy boats to evacuate residents trapped in flooded neighbourhoods.

The heavy rainfall claimed at least 15 lives through electrocution and other rain-related incidents, while many families lost their livelihoods due to partial flooding. Even days after the downpour, several localities remained waterlogged, with sewage mixing into stagnant rainwater. Road infrastructure suffered severe damage, and prolonged power outages further compounded the misery of residents.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for possible disruptions in daily life during the upcoming spell.
