In a bizarre turn of events that has left both passengers and aviation authorities scratching their heads, a man who was supposed to board a domestic flight from Lahore to Karachi ended up landing in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia — without a passport or visa.
The incident, which took place on July 8, has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about airport security protocols, especially amid ongoing construction work at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Speaking to reporters after being deported back to Lahore, the bewildered passenger recounted the surreal experience.
“It wasn’t my fault,” he said. “I just want to reach Karachi. The airline should make that happen — but they’re asking me to buy another ticket.”
How Did This Even Happen?
According to the airline, the mix-up occurred due to “operational confusion” caused by ongoing renovation at the airport. After 10pm, both domestic and international flights were reportedly using the same domestic lounge area because parts of the terminal were closed off due to construction.
As luck would have it, flights to Karachi and Jeddah were scheduled around the same time, and in the chaos, the passenger — who didn’t have a passport on him — mistakenly boarded the international flight to Saudi Arabia.
One airport staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “It was late, there was crowding, and staff were stretched thin. But even then — how does someone without a passport end up on an international flight?”
An International Detour Without Documents
Once in Jeddah, Saudi immigration officials quickly realized something was off. The passenger had no passport, no visa, and no clue how he ended up in the Kingdom. He was briefly detained, questioned, and then deported back to Lahore on the next available flight.
Airline Under Fire
While the passenger has demanded the airline cover the cost of a proper ticket to Karachi, the private carrier has so far refused, allegedly blaming him for the mistake.
In response, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has stepped in, saying senior officials have taken serious notice of the incident. A formal letter has been issued to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), urging regulatory action against the airline. A hefty fine has also been recommended for what officials are calling “gross negligence.”
Bigger Questions Remain
This strange case may sound like something out of a comedy sketch, but it points to very real issues in passenger management and aviation safety.
“How do you let someone board an international flight without even glancing at their travel documents?” asked a digital rights activist on X, reflecting the mood of many online.
As construction continues at major airports across the country and airlines struggle with overlapping flight schedules, this incident serves as a stark reminder of what can go wrong when basic checks are ignored.
For now, the passenger is still in Lahore — hoping someone, somewhere, will finally send him to the city he meant to visit all along: Karachi.
