Water Supply from Dhabeji Restored After Days-Long Disruption

After several days of disruption, the water supply from Karachi’s vital Dhabeji Pumping Station has finally been restored to full capacity, according to a statement issued by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) on Tuesday.

The resumption of supply comes after K-Electric successfully repaired the underground cable fault that had caused a major power outage at the facility. Water Corporation officials confirmed that affected areas across the city should start seeing normal supply within the next 24 hours.

The disruption, which began last Thursday, resulted in a massive shortfall of 360 million gallons of water, plunging several key city neighborhoods into a serious water crisis.

Among the hardest-hit areas were Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, PIB Colony, Mehmoodabad, Lines Area, Clifton, Defence, and parts of the Old City.

According to a K-Electric spokesperson, the issue arose when two of the 22 pumping motors at Dhabeji suddenly shut down due to a fault in the underground cable system. The situation was further complicated by stagnant rainwater at the site, which delayed repair efforts and hindered swift access to the faulty equipment.

“The repair team had to wait for the water to recede before carrying out the necessary work,” the K-Electric official explained, adding that coordination with KWSC remained ongoing throughout the process.

Water Corporation representatives have assured citizens that supply lines are now operational, and full restoration is expected soon. They also urged residents to use water responsibly as the system stabilizes.

This incident once again highlights the vulnerability of Karachi’s water infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season when both power outages and flooding frequently converge to disrupt essential services.
