KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has dismissed the appeal of Syed Ameenullah, who had been convicted in a major drug smuggling case, confirming that the prosecution successfully proved the charges against him beyond any reasonable doubt.
Ameenullah was sentenced to life in prison by a Malir sessions court after being found in possession of 57 kilograms of charas, recovered from his vehicle in the Gadap area on March 15, 2021.
During the appeal, his lawyer argued that the prosecution failed to prove the drug recovery and claimed there were contradictions in witness statements. He also questioned why no independent witness was involved in the search and recovery process, despite prior information.
However, the deputy prosecutor general defended the conviction, stating that the prosecution presented solid evidence, including a chemical examiner’s report confirming the recovered substance was indeed charas. The court was also told that proper procedures were followed for the safe custody and handling of the seized drugs.
After carefully reviewing both sides, the SHC bench — comprising Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput and Justice Tasneem Sultana — found no merit in the appeal. The judges remarked that minor discrepancies in witness statements do not weaken the overall strength of the prosecution’s case.
The court concluded that the prosecution had taken all necessary steps and upheld the sentence, stating that the case had been proven beyond any reasonable doubt.
As a result, Ameenullah’s appeal was dismissed, and his life sentence remains in place.
