The global community, including Pakistan, observed the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Saturday, reaffirming its collective commitment to justice, dignity, and the long-denied right to self-determination of the Palestinian nation.
The United Nations has been marking this day every year since 1977, after the General Assembly declared November 29 as the official day of solidarity. The date carries historical significance as it coincides with the day in 1947 when the UN adopted the resolution proposing the partition of Palestine.
Under UNGA Resolution 60/37, passed on December 1, 2005, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights were instructed to continue holding annual exhibitions or cultural programmes in collaboration with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN. Member states were also urged to extend full support and help raise global awareness about the day’s observance.
In their separate messages, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause. They emphasized Pakistan’s backing for the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
