Jinnah Hospital Performs First-Ever Artificial Knee Implant for Cancer Patient

KARACHI (September 11, 2025):
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at Jinnah Hospital Karachi have successfully performed the hospital’s first artificial knee replacement on a cancer patient a procedure that has given a 26-year-old man a new lease of life.

According to hospital officials, the complex surgery, which lasted four hours, was carried out entirely free of charge despite its market cost of nearly Rs 3.5 million. For the first time in Jinnah Hospital’s history, an artificial knee was implanted in a cancer patient, marking a milestone in public healthcare.

Leading the team, Dr. Farrukh explained that the patient had developed cancer beneath the knee and foot. Following the operation, all test results showed no remaining signs of cancer. “This young man came to us with his life hanging in the balance. Today, with this successful implant, he has been given a future,” Dr. Farrukh said.

The surgical team included Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushhal, with the plastic surgery unit supported by Dr. Agha Waseem, Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.

Highlighting the significance of the procedure, Dr. Farrukh noted that the artificial knee itself costs around Rs 10–11 lakh but was provided at no expense to the patient. He added that the implant, widely used worldwide, can remain effective for 20 to 25 years.

The successful operation not only restored the patient’s health but also set a precedent for future cancer treatments at Jinnah Hospital, where advanced surgical options are now becoming a reality for those who cannot afford them.
