Omar Khalid Makes History as First Pakistani Golfer to Win Title in the US

Evansville, Indiana — Pakistan’s teenage golf sensation Omar Khalid Hussain etched his name in the history books on Sunday by becoming the first Pakistani ever to win a golf title on American soil. The 20-year-old clinched the prestigious Fendrich Open with a thrilling one-stroke victory over seasoned professional Zach Williams of Illinois.

Omar, currently the only Pakistani competing in NCAA Division 1 the top tier of collegiate sports in the United States displayed nerves of steel at the par-70 Fendrich Golf Course. He posted an impressive two-round total of 126 (-14), with back-to-back scores of 61 and 65, to outlast a field stacked with experienced professionals in the $18,700 event.

The Karachi-born golfer set the tone on Saturday with a dazzling opening round of 9-under-par 61, carding eight birdies and an eagle to storm to the top of the leaderboard. Though he stumbled with a bogey on the opening hole of the final round, Omar bounced back quickly, producing six birdies en route to a 65 that sealed his landmark victory.

This triumph adds yet another chapter to Omar’s trailblazing career. At just 16, he became the youngest winner of the Pakistan Amateur Championship. A year later, he made history again as the first Pakistani to make the cut in a United States Golf Association (USGA) event, doing so at the US Junior Golf Championship at the iconic Bandon Dunes Golf Club in Oregon. He has since recorded top finishes in international competitions, including a fourth-place finish at the Qatar Open 2024.

Omar, now the youngest ever Pakistan No.1, has also represented his country at the Asian Games, Asia-Pacific Championship, and the World Championship, while testing his game at prestigious events such as the British Amateur, Scottish Open, and St Andrews Open.

Speaking after his victory, the big-hitting youngster expressed optimism about the road ahead.

“I’m happy with the way my game is progressing and will continue working hard to achieve my dream to play and win on the PGA Tour someday,” Omar said.

For a nation where golf has long remained on the margins of sport, Omar’s breakthrough on US soil is nothing short of historic. His victory signals not just personal triumph but also a new horizon for Pakistani golf on the international stage.
