Karachi — In a development that could reshape Pakistan’s energy future, the Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with China, has confirmed the discovery of significant gas reserves deep beneath the Arabian Sea. The revelation was made public on Pakistan Navy Day, observed on September 8, to honor the sacrifices and achievements of the country’s naval forces.
Rear Admiral (retd) Fawad Amin Baig shared the breakthrough while speaking on Geo News’ Capital Talk. He credited the Pakistan Navy with spearheading the exploration efforts, noting that the survey — conducted with Chinese technical assistance — revealed large untapped gas deposits on the seabed.
“The waters surrounding Pakistan are not only abundant in marine life but also hold untapped mineral and energy resources that, if utilized wisely, could transform the country’s economic landscape,” Baig emphasized.
He further stressed that the challenge now lies in attracting investors and securing advanced technology to capitalize on the discovery. “Every time Pakistan moves toward economic progress, hostile fifth-generation warfare tactics discourage foreign investment. But with the Special Investment Facilitation Council and the joint efforts of civil and military leadership, we are moving towards a stronger economy,” he added.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of Pakistan’s ongoing cooperation with China in mining and resource exploration. A joint statement released last year outlined Beijing’s commitment to expanding collaboration with Islamabad in marine oil, natural gas hydrates, and offshore energy blocks. Chinese companies are expected to play a key role in the next phase of development.
If successfully harnessed, experts believe the newly identified reserves could provide a much-needed boost to Pakistan’s struggling energy sector, offering long-term relief in the face of growing economic challenges.
