Pakistan and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing defence cooperation, with a particular focus on collaboration in defence production.
Indonesia’s Defence Minister, Lt Gen (Retd) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who is currently visiting Pakistan, called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM Office on Tuesday. During the meeting, Lt Gen Sjamsoeddin conveyed the best wishes of President Prabowo Subianto to the prime minister and the people of Pakistan.
The Indonesian minister expressed his country’s keen interest in further strengthening defence ties with Pakistan, exploring avenues for joint ventures in defence production. Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the proposal and reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to expand bilateral cooperation not only in defence but also in economic, strategic, and trade sectors.
He described Pakistan and Indonesia as longstanding friends, bound together by shared cultural, religious, and historical ties, and supporting each other at international forums. The two sides stressed the need to enhance multifaceted cooperation for mutual benefit.
The prime minister fondly recalled his meeting with President Prabowo Subianto last year on the sidelines of the Developing-8 Summit in Cairo and conveyed his best wishes for the Indonesian president. He also reviewed ongoing initiatives under the Pakistan-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement, agreeing to accelerate their implementation in key areas of shared interest.
Later, Lt Gen Sjamsoeddin met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The visiting dignitary, who is leading a delegation comprising senior officials from Indonesia’s military and intelligence agencies, held extensive discussions with Pakistan’s top military leadership.
According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both sides exchanged views on regional security, defence cooperation, and strategies to enhance military collaboration. Field Marshal Munir emphasised the importance of mutual cooperation in maintaining regional peace and stability.
The Indonesian defence minister appreciated the professional achievements of the Pakistan Army, particularly its effective role in combating terrorism, and expressed Indonesia’s desire to further expand military-to-military cooperation with Pakistan.
The meetings underscored the deep-rooted brotherly ties between Pakistan and Indonesia, highlighting a shared vision for peace, development, and strategic partnership in the region.
