PM Urges Renewed Commitment to Democracy on Parliamentarism Day

Shehbaz Sharif hails inclusive legislation, women’s leadership in Parliament

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday marked the International Day of Parliamentarism with a call to reinforce democratic values and ensure the voices of ordinary citizens continue to shape Pakistan’s legislative direction.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz highlighted the central role of Parliament in upholding transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He said June 30 — observed globally each year — is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of strong parliamentary institutions and reaffirm a collective commitment to democracy.

“Our Parliament sits at the heart of the democratic system,” the Prime Minister said. “Through its legislative authority and the oversight of its standing committees, it serves as the guardian of public accountability and executive scrutiny.”

Shehbaz also underscored the progress made in gender representation and leadership within Pakistan’s parliamentary structure. Citing Articles 51 and 59 of the Constitution, he noted that reserved seats have enabled increased participation of women, many of whom now hold key committee positions.

“Today, eight women Senators and four women MNAs chair Parliamentary Committees — a testament to breaking barriers and promoting empowered, inclusive leadership,” he stated.

The Prime Minister further pointed to recent legislative strides aimed at promoting gender equality and social protection. “Parliament has remained proactive in championing progressive laws,” he said, adding that continued reform is key to ensuring laws reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.

“As we commemorate this important day,” he added, “let us renew our resolve to protect democratic values and build a Parliament that truly represents the voice of every citizen.”

    Visit to Chaudhry Nisar’s Residence

In a separate development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also visited the residence of estranged party colleague Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in Rawalpindi, reportedly to inquire about his health.

According to an official statement, the two leaders discussed national and international issues in what was described as a cordial meeting. Sources close to the Prime Minister’s Office said the conversation was held in a “pleasant and reflective atmosphere,” with both men sharing personal memories from their long political association.

The visit has sparked speculation about a potential political rapprochement between the two seasoned politicians, though no formal announcements have been made.
