Meta Launches Instagram Map in Pakistan, Enhancing Local Discovery and Connection

KARACHI — Meta has officially rolled out its Instagram Map feature in Pakistan, offering users a more interactive way to explore and share what’s happening around them from local cafés and concerts to popular hangout spots all while maintaining strong privacy protections.

Announced on October 4, the new feature appears directly at the top of users’ DM inboxes, making it easy to access and navigate. Through the Instagram Map, users can now view and share stories, reels, posts, and notes tagged with specific locations, helping them discover what friends and favorite creators are up to nearby.

In addition to browsing local content, users have the option to share their live or last active location but only with selected contacts. They can choose to share it with close friends, specific people, or no one at all, ensuring full control over their privacy.

Meta emphasized that location sharing is turned off by default, and users will always see a clear indicator at the top of the map showing whether it’s active. Additional reminders also appear whenever someone adds a location tag to their content.

For younger audiences, Meta has built in parental supervision tools that allow parents to monitor and manage how teens share their location on Instagram part of the company’s broader effort to make social experiences safer for young users.

In recent updates, Meta has also refined the Instagram Map interface, removing profile photos from map previews, clarifying indicators when location sharing is off, and allowing users to preview how their tagged content appears before posting.

The launch follows Meta’s earlier rollout of new sharing and discovery features announced on August 6, which introduced a repost tab, an interactive live location map, and a refreshed Reels interface. The update also added a “Friends” tab in Reels to highlight the videos users’ friends are engaging with part of Instagram’s push to make the platform more personal and community-driven.

With the introduction of Instagram Map, Meta aims to deepen user engagement in Pakistan’s rapidly growing digital space, helping people connect not just online but also through shared real-world experiences.
