Pakistan’s First Free Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center Opens at Dow University

KARACHI (October 4, 2025): In a landmark step for healthcare in Pakistan, the country’s first free Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center has been established at Dow University’s Ojha Campus. The facility, named the Dr. Syed Ashiq Hussain Rehabilitation Center in honor of the late Dr. Syed Ashiq Hussain former head of the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazli Hussain.

Alongside the rehabilitation unit, Prof. Hussain also formally opened a new IV Dilution Center at the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases. The event was attended by senior faculty members including Director Prof. Iftikhar Ahmed, Deputy Director Dr. Murtaza Soho, Dr. Niaz Soomro, Dr. Faisal Asad, and Dr. Faisal Fayyaz Zuberi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Hussain emphasized Dow University’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare. “The establishment of these two centers marks another step forward in our mission to provide advanced medical facilities to patients who need them the most,” she said.

Prof. Iftikhar Ahmed highlighted that the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases continues to provide comprehensive services to patients suffering from respiratory illnesses including free diagnosis, treatment, and medication. He added that the institute remains the only facility in the country offering intensive care support free of cost for tuberculosis patients, a service not available elsewhere in Pakistan.

The inauguration of these centers represents a significant milestone in strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly for underprivileged communities battling chronic respiratory conditions.
