THATTA — Karachi’s water supply may take a major hit after a sudden power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station disrupted operations on Sunday morning, officials from the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said. The outage forced the shutdown of two pumps in the station’s second phase, sharply reducing discharge from Line No 5. Authorities warned that the city could face a shortfall of up to 100 million gallons per day (MGD).
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the fault occurred around 6:35am, immediately impacting water flow from one of the city’s main sources. “The line was directly affected when power was suspended. Repair teams have been deployed on an emergency basis, and work is ongoing to restore operations,” the official said.
The Dhabeji system has been plagued by recurring technical faults in recent weeks. Just earlier this month, the K-III pump house remained non-operational for 36 hours due to a cable fault. Frequent breakdowns and insufficient maintenance have repeatedly undermined pumping capacity, leaving many neighbourhoods struggling with an escalating water crisis.
KWSC authorities assured the public that teams are working round-the-clock to resolve the issue, but residents may experience intermittent water shortages until full restoration.
