Floodwaters Swamp Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara: A Timeless Sanctuary Under Threat

Heavy monsoon rainfall, coupled with large water releases upstream, has caused devastating flooding at one of Sikhism’s holiest sites: Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan. The revered shrine, located just across the border from Dera Baba Nanak in India, now lies partially submerged as the Ravi River breaches its banks.

Images emerging from the site show sacred courtyard areas engulfed under four to seven feet of water, while the Kartarpur Corridor the visa-free pathway that connects Indian pilgrims to the Gurdwara has also succumbed to inundation. Inside the shrine, the sanctum remains fortunately safe: the Guru Granth Sahib and other religious texts are secured on the upper level, away from the rising floodwaters.

The surge in river levels follows high-volume water releases from Ranjit Sagar Dam in India and incessant summer rains. What began as a precautionary release quickly escalated into a full-fledged emergency, flooding farmlands, villages, and roads in both Indian and Pakistani Punjab.

On the Indian side, breaches in the Dhussi embankment near Dera Baba Nanak caused widespread inundation of fields and homes. Similarly, on the Pakistani side, Narowal’s Kartarpur Corridor and surrounding villages were hit hard, prompting evacuations and cutting off access to pilgrims and visitors.

The event carries deeper resonance beyond a natural disaster. Kartarpur Sahib holds immense spiritual importance, commemorating the final days of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The corridor, inaugurated in 2019, symbolized a bridge between two nations. Now, that symbol is under threat from flooding a stark reminder of the vulnerability of even the most sacred sites.

Authorities on both sides are scrambling to respond. Rescue operations, evacuation alerts, and relief efforts are underway, yet concerns continue to rise as additional rainfall is forecasted for the region. Community members especially Sikhs worldwide are anxiously watching the situation and calling for measures to protect this cherished place of worship.
