Karachi: Heavy rains lashed parts of Karachi late Thursday night, plunging large sections of the city into darkness after more than 340 K-Electric feeders tripped amid the downpour.
Electricity outages were reported across multiple neighborhoods, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Scheme 33, Gulshan-e-Muammar, Korangi, Bin Qasim, and Orangi Town. Other areas like Defence Phase VI, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Baldia Town, and Surjani Town were also affected. Even areas that only saw light showers weren’t spared, as the city’s fragile power infrastructure struggled to cope.
K-Electric confirmed that the outages were directly linked to weather-induced tripping, a recurring issue during the monsoon season. “Due to the rain, some feeders tripped as a precautionary safety measure,” the utility said in a statement.
Rainfall—ranging from light drizzles to heavier spells—was reported in several parts of the city, including Malir, Shah Latif Town, Memon Goth, Razzaqabad, Gulshan-e-Hadid, Bhens Colony, and Saddar. Key roads such as University Road, Tariq Road, Bahadurabad, Jail Road, Hasan Square, and P.I.B. also saw standing water and traffic disruptions.
Other rain-hit localities included Safura, Saadi Town, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Incholi, Gulberg, and Garden.
City authorities have urged residents to stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel, as more showers are expected and rain-related disruptions continue.
