In a forward-thinking move that blends education, sustainability, and economic equity, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a landmark initiative: the federal government will provide free electric bikes to the highest-achieving students across all educational boards in Pakistan, including the Federal Board.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting on electric vehicle (EV) promotion held in Islamabad on Friday. The prime minister emphasized that the scheme is about more than just mobility — it’s about celebrating academic excellence, supporting green transportation, and creating economic opportunity.
“Rewarding our brightest minds with clean, efficient transport is a step toward a smarter, greener Pakistan,” the PM reportedly told attendees.
Women, Economically Disadvantaged Prioritized
To ensure inclusive development, the Prime Minister directed that 25% of the total quota for electric vehicles be reserved for women — a notable effort to address gender disparity in both education and mobility. He also called for a 10% share of the program to be allocated to Balochistan, a province often underserved in national schemes, exceeding the usual population-based distribution.
The initiative doesn’t stop at students. The government also plans to distribute electric rickshaws and loaders to economically disadvantaged individuals — a move designed to create jobs, reduce transport costs, and cut Pakistan’s dependency on imported fuel.
“This isn’t just an education or energy policy,” said one senior official in attendance. “It’s a blueprint for sustainable economic empowerment.”
A Nationwide Rollout with Ambitious Numbers
According to government officials, over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders will be made available across the country under easy financing terms and subsidized loans. A detailed action plan is already in the works to ensure affordability and fair distribution.
The program will also focus on building an ecosystem to support the shift to electric mobility. This includes the establishment of four new battery manufacturing companies in Pakistan — a development expected to spur industrial growth, generate employment, and reduce reliance on imported EV components.
Quality, Transparency & Public Awareness
In a bid to ensure the initiative’s success and integrity, PM Shehbaz has instructed authorities to enforce strict safety and quality standards for all electric vehicles distributed under the program. Additionally, third-party validation will be conducted to ensure transparency in both distribution and implementation.
To help citizens better understand and access the initiative, the government is also planning a nationwide awareness campaign. The goal is to build public trust and encourage adoption of electric vehicles — not just among students and low-income workers, but across society.
