In a strong push toward inclusivity and social empowerment, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Friday distributed Rs400 million in financial aid to organisations working for the welfare of persons with disabilities. The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the Chief Minister House, organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD).
Cheques were handed over to 56 partner organisations, with officials confirming that the funds had already been transferred to the respective beneficiaries. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to building “an inclusive, empowered, and equitable society.”
Expanded Budget and New Facilities
CM Shah announced a significant increase in the DEPD budget to Rs800 million for the upcoming fiscal year. He also revealed that 20 new rehabilitation centres have been set up in collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), while the capacity of 15 existing centres has been upgraded.
As part of the broader support framework, 66 centres have now been equipped with transport facilities, offering pick-and-drop services to specially-abled individuals. In a landmark announcement, Shah confirmed that 12 Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centres (CRTs) will become operational by the end of this year, with one in each district of Sindh.
Inclusive Education and Infrastructure
Highlighting the importance of inclusive education, the chief minister revealed that a dedicated directorate and curriculum have been developed to integrate children with disabilities into mainstream schools. He emphasised that inclusive education is a vital step toward reshaping mindsets and creating equal opportunities.
Murad Ali Shah also termed assistive technologies—including wheelchairs, prosthetics, and communication aids—as “symbols of independence and dignity.” He issued directives for the mandatory installation of wheelchair ramps in all government buildings, noting that the Chief Minister House itself is now fully accessible.
A Touching Tribute
The ceremony concluded on an emotional note as specially-abled children presented a tableau in tribute to the Pakistan Army, earning widespread applause from the attendees. The children also presented handmade artworks to the chief minister, symbolising both talent and resilience.
The event not only underscored the government’s proactive approach to disability inclusion but also served as a heartfelt reminder of the potential that lies within every individual—regardless of physical limitations.
