Azhar Mahmood Appointed Pakistan’s Red-Ball Head Coach

LAHORE – July 1, 2025: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named former international all-rounder and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood as the interim head coach for the national men’s red-ball team.

According to an official statement released on Monday, Azhar will continue in this role until the conclusion of his current contract. The move comes as part of the PCB’s broader efforts to stabilize the team’s coaching setup and build long-term consistency in red-ball cricket.

Azhar, who previously served as the national team’s assistant coach, is no stranger to the dressing room dynamics and player development pathways. His deep understanding of the team’s structure and strategy is expected to help ensure a smoother transition in leadership.

With an extensive background in international cricket and a strong track record on the English county circuit, Azhar Mahmood brings a unique blend of experience and cricketing intelligence to the role. The PCB highlighted his red-ball credentials, noting his key role in securing two County Championship titles during his playing days — a testament to his tactical sharpness and leadership qualities.

“Azhar’s experience and understanding of the game, both on and off the field, make him a strong candidate to lead the red-ball side during this phase,” said a PCB official. “His professionalism and insight into red-ball cricket will be vital in guiding the team forward.”

The Board expressed confidence that Azhar’s appointment would have a positive impact on the team’s performance, discipline, and mindset — especially as Pakistan eyes several crucial Test series in the upcoming months.
