The mystery surrounding the death of actress Humaira Asghar took a somber turn on Wednesday as her family declined to take custody of her body, police confirmed.
According to officials, the 35-year-old actress was found dead inside her apartment in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VI earlier this week. Her decomposed body was discovered by a court-appointed bailiff who had arrived at the flat over a rent dispute. The apartment, located in the city’s Ittehad Commercial Area, had been her residence for nearly seven years.
Police say that Humaira had not paid rent since 2024, prompting the flat’s owners to initiate legal proceedings. It was during one such visit related to the case that the grim discovery was made.
The body was shifted to a local morgue, where authorities say they contacted her immediate family, requesting them to come forward for identification and burial arrangements. However, the family reportedly refused, saying they had “no connection” with her.
“This is a highly unusual situation,” a police official told ARY News. “The family has clearly told us they will not be receiving the body.”
If the stance remains unchanged, the police say they will proceed with the burial through official channels, as per law.
An autopsy has already been conducted, though investigators are still awaiting the final forensic report to determine the cause of death. So far, there are no signs of foul play, but authorities have not ruled out any possibilities.
Humaira Asghar, known for her supporting roles in several television dramas, had reportedly kept a low profile in recent years. Her death and the subsequent family refusal have left many in the entertainment industry stunned.
